Lan Zhou woke her daughter, Grace Xu, early on Oct. It was a significant day – SAT scores were being released.The 16-year-old was confused for a minute, groggy from sleep, when she saw the numbers on her mother’s cellphone screen.She’d gotten a perfect score, emulating her sister, Hope, who scored a flawless 2400 on the college entrance exam in 2009.Zhou cheered and hugged her daughter before praying to celebrate the good news. Then Grace went back to sleep for another hour – it was late start day at University High School in Irvine – while her mother alerted her father, Hong, who was on a business trip in Washington, and her sister, Hope, a Princeton University student who is studying abroad at Oxford this semester. The girls plan to celebrate together over Thanksgiving break with a mint chip cake.For both sisters, learning they’d gotten the highest possible score was met first with disbelief, then acceptance and excitement.
Hope, who was also 16 and a high school junior when she took the SAT, had gotten out of bed at 4:10 a.m. To check her score online.“I just never thought I was going to get a perfect score,” Grace said.Perfect SAT scores are rare – 0.03 percent of 1.66 million 2013 graduates nationwide received a 2400, the College Board said in an email. In California, the rate bumps up to 0.04 percent – 98 students of the 234,767 graduates in 2013. Data for Grace’s year will be released in fall 2015, the College Board stated.The sisters started with practice questions in middle school, and both took the test as eighth-graders as practice.

“I didn’t really realize that it actually helped until I took (the SAT) in eighth grade,” Grace said.Grace recalls scoring a 2170, and missing her sister’s prom preparations because she was taking the three-hour 45-minute test.“My mom was really happy,” she said. “It wasn’t a big deal to me.”Grace describes herself as the laid-back sister. She’s not sure yet what she wants to study in college, but is considering business because she enjoys the Future Business Leaders of America club at school. Hope is a junior studying molecular biology and neuroscience at Princeton in New Jersey.“We have very different personalities,” she said. “I work hard, but I’m a lot more free-spirited.
