Looking to get into the IT field (Cisco Routers and Switches) and am a bit overwhelmed by all the self study choices. I'd like to find a program/package that is clearly organized and all encompassing wit the books, work books, videos, labs, practice tests ect.
I've Looked at the Cisco web site, Alphaprep, Ciscopress, CBT Nuggets, INE, and too many others to mention. Not looking for the cheapest, just the best value and completeness. Anyone care to share their experiences and give advice?About having a home lab. I currently do not work in the field or have access to actual equipment.

I took the CCENT and CCNA after completing the Cisco Networking Academy program at a community college, and I manly used Wendell Odom’s Cisco Press CCENT book and Packet Tracer for the ICND1. Packet Tracer is awesome and you can get it for free from Cisco by taking an hour long Cisco 101 course.While I was studying for the ICND2, I bought two Cisco 1841 routers and two Cisco 2950 switches off of eBay. They were quite helpful in learning more about hands-on troubleshooting, but I still mostly used Packet Tracer since it was easier to create bigger topologies. I think having the physical hardware helped make the study material more relatable and less abstract so it was definitely worth the money in the end.One of the most important things that helped me was having multiple sources of study material. I read both Todd Lammle’s and Wendell Odoms’s CCNA books, and they were both extremely insightful. Odom’s book is somewhat dry, but he explains the theory in-depth while Lammle’s writing style is easier to read.
Having both books helps when you have a hard time understanding a concept. A friend of mine loved the CBT Nuggets videos while studying for the CCNA, but I decided against it because of the cost.Good luck with your studies!
