How To Install Usb Mass Storage Device Driver

22.01.2020

I'm using Acronis TI 2018 and have been for months. Here's the complete story - On Jan 4th I did a full system backup to an external USB drive. On the 6th, I plugged in a flash drive, but it wasn't recognized. I tried a reboot, but it failed with 'inaccessible boot device'. I did a full restore from the externaldrive using Acronis. I could now boot the system.

I noticed that the external drive which was powered up at boot time was recognized. I disconnected it. I connected it later, but it wasn't recognized (missing device driver). Since the system was running, Ididn't mess with anything.A week later, I tried a reboot again.

Again it failed with 'inaccessible boot device'. I did the restore, booted, and created a system restore point. Another week went. I rebooted again, and again it failed. I did a system restore back to the restorepoint and the system booted.

That's when I noticed that the flash drive would be recognized immediately after the reboot, but not sometime later.I noticed that there were two updates applied on the 4th after the system backup. One of them was KB4056892. It has a defect listed as causing some older AMD CPUs to not boot. Although I have an Intel CPU, the symptom sounds the same. I was thinking of uninstallingthat update, but there's a fix available (KB4073290) so I'm going to download and install the fix and see what happens. It might be a few days before I have the time to mess with it.I have no idea if there's any relationship between this and the USB drive issue.

I guess I'll find out after installing the fix.Steve. I finally had a few hours where I didn't need the PC and could play with this.

Reboot after applying KB4056892 failed again with 'inaccessible boot device'. I had to do a system restore in order to get the PC to boot. Once I did, I could accessUSB drives again. I created a manual restore point and did a full backup to an external drive using Acronis. Once that completed, I did a reboot which worked.

However, several hours later, USB drives were not recognized (missing driver) and a reboot failed(inaccessible boot device). Did a system restore using the manual one that I created. System boots fine. After a while, USB drives are not being recognized again. I'm baffled!msinfo32 and event log are available here - for your help!Steve.

It happens on any/every USB drive that I attach. If I click on update driver and have it search windows/system32, I get this dialog -As for the inaccessible boot device problem, I've found lots of posts about it being related to a January update that was released. The PC was running Windows 7 Pro before it was upgraded for free to Windows 10 Pro. I haven't had time to try any of the solutionsin those posts.I don't know if the problems are related or not. What I can't understand is why after a system restore and successful boot, the USB drives are properly recognized for a period of time but then no longer are.Thanks,Steve.

Found the answer. Very simple actually.First is to ensure that the HKEYLOCALMACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesUSBSTOR start value is 3.If you are an administrator on the machine, ensure C:windowssystem32drivers have SYSTEM user access especially USBSTOR.SYS.If you don't have usbstor.inf in that directory or anywhere in c:windows, go download from the web.Go to Device Manager an uninstall the '? ' which was a result of the failed driver installation.Plug-in the device, then when asked where to search, point to c:windowssystem32drivers.Viola. To Matriniko:So many thanks!!! In fact, my PC has just 'lost a way' to USB drivers of all kinds. After I have read your post, aAll the problems were solved in a few minutes: I've just deleted everything that did not work properly, then when Wizard asked me for a way to.inf files (in English version it should be something like 'Explore the following location') I have browsed to the C:Windowsinf directory, and then whenever the following Wizards asked me same questions, I gave the same answer. Everything, including the USB flash, have then been installed and works as it should. Many thanks again for the hint!!!VladGreetings from Ukraine.
